Mrs. Jenny Marie D. Blancaflor won the BEST ORAL PRESENTER award at the recently concluded International Conference on Advance Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (ICAPPS) on September 26-29, 2018 in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra, Indonesia. She bested 36 other competitors from Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Philippines and Japan on pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences research. Mrs. Blancaflor, a faculty member of the Department of Pharmacy College of Health and Allied Medical Professions of University of San Agustin, presented her studies on the phytochemicals from Kadios (Cajanus cajan) seeds that have the potential as antibiotic against drug-resistant bacteria. Kadios is a staple of the Western Visayan diet and the major ingredient of the Ilonggo dish called kadios-baboy-langka (KBL). Aside from a certificate of recognition, she received a cash prize of 2,000,000.00 Rupiah (7,000 pesos). Her research work is a technology generated by the newly established research centers in USA: the Center for Natural Drug Discovery and Development (CND3) and Center for Chemical Biology and Biotechnology (C2B2). Mrs. Blancaflor recently completed her Master of Science in Pharmacy degree at University of Santo Tomas, Manila through the University of San Agustin scholarship program and mentorship of Dr. Doralyn S. Dalisay, a DOST Balik Scientist.
Another faculty member who presented a research paper at the 2018 ICAPPS is Mrs. Nilita Sirikit P. Villanueva. Her study is on anticancer activity of a mangrove plant Barringtonia asiatica, locally known as bolubitoon. Bolubitoon is known for its folkloric use for cysts and tumors. Mrs. Villanueva is finishing her thesis for Master of Science in Pharmacy at Centro Escolar University, Manila. She conducts her thesis work at CND3 and C2B2 as well under the mentorship of Dr. Dalisay and is supported by USA scholarship program.
Mrs. Blancaflor and Mrs. Villanueva were accompanied by Dr. Dalisay, who was an invited Plenary Speaker at the 2018 ICAPPS. She joined other Plenary Speakers from the Netherlands, Japan, UK, Australia, Malaysia and Indonesia. She showcased the research outputs on drug discovery at the CND3 and C2B2 of USA. Dr. Dalisay is the current Director of C2B2.
The key aim of the 2018 ICAPPS is to accelerate and disseminate research in pharmacy and pharmaceutical science. It provided participants with an excellent platform for sharing of experiences and discoveries on cutting-edge research methods and findings on various topics such as drug discovery and development, pharmaceutical sciences and technology, biotechnology, pharmaceutical analysis, pharmacology, toxicology, clinical pharmacy, and pharmacy community.
At 65, USA breaks ground for new Phar-Med Tech building, launches two new research hubs, awards outstanding alumni
In a span of seven days, the University of San Agustin went abuzz with festive activities in celebration of 65 years as the first institution of higher learning in Western Visayas. Alumni and personnel came home from July 7 to 15, 2018 to the USA Main and the extension campus in Sambag, Jaro, Iloilo City to reminisce their school days and reacquaint themselves with the recent developments at their Alma Mater.
On July 12, Thursday, the University broke ground and blessed the site for the new Pharmacy-Medical Technology Building along Jalandoni Street, Iloilo City. Rev. Fr. Frederick C. Comendador, O. S. A., University President gave credence to the excellent performance of the Pharmacy and Medical Technology programs in the licensure examinations for decades. He said that the University is “happy and proud to offer a new edifice to the new breed of students and teachers as we continue in our quest for excellence.”
Prof. Doralyn Dalisay was recognized for her outstanding accomplishments in the field of Microbiology by the Philippine Academy of Microbiology (PAM). She was conferred as Diplomate of PAM during the 47th Philippine Society for Microbiology (PSM) Annual Convention and Scientific Meeting held on July 19- 20, 2018 at The Oriental, Taysan Hill, Sto. Niño, Legazpi City, Albay.
Prof. Dalisay was one of the new seven Diplomates to receive the honor. The other Diplomates were from from University of Philippines (Diliman, Manila and Bagiuo), University of Santo Tomas and private industries. Also conferred were two Fellows from De La Salle University and University of Technology Malaysia.
The Philippine Academy of Microbiology (PAM) was established in 1994 and is the certification arm of the Philippine Society for Microbiology, Inc., (PSM). There are nearly 70 PAM members who are distinguished experts in Microbiology from the academe, research institutions, and the industry. The categories for PAM membership are Diplomate and Fellow. Membership is through nomination and to be accepted, nominees should have the following credentials: winning national or international awards in the field of microbiology; and, publication of peer-reviewed research articles in scientific journals.
Dr. Doralyn Dalisay graduated from University of San Agustin, Iloilo with a degree in Pharmacy (cum laude) and earned her Master of Science in Biology at the University of the Philippines in the Visayas. She obtained her PhD in Microbiology at University of New South Wales, Australia. Dr. Dalisay received a postdoctoral fellowship to specialize on marine natural products chemistry at University of California, San Diego, USA. Dr. Dalisay was been engaged in several drug discovery scientific research undertakings at University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada and Washington State University, Pullman, Washington, USA. She returned to the Philippines as Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Balik Scientist in June 2015 to establish research program on natural products drug discovery at the Center for Chemical Biology and Biotechnology (C2B2) in University of San Agustin.
She is a pioneering scientist to work on the biodiversity, biological activities and chemistry of marine sediment-derived actinobacteria from Philippine archipelago, that could one day help to find new antibiotics and potentially address the problem of drug-resistant pathogenic bacteria. Dr. Dalisay has worked extensively on the development of culture dependent strategies to access the vast biodiverse actinobacteria from different environmental samples in the Philippines. Her group explored the Philippine archipelago for the presence of promising actinobacteria found in the marine sediment samples collected in different islands in the country. Her laboratory at C2B2 now houses a library of more than 2,000 highly diverse marine sediment-derived actinobacteria isolates that serves as “BioBank for Drug Discovery Research” in the country.
Dr. Dalisay has published research papers in high impact journals. Her publication received more than 1500 citations. She has won a number of awards in recognition for her research, publications and patents. Her research program at the Chemical Biology and Biotechnology in University of San Agustin is supported by National Research Council of the Philippines-Department of Science and Technology (NRCP-DOST), United States Agency for International Development, Science, Technology, Research and Innovation for Development (USAID-STRIDE) Program and University of San Agustin.

USA to honor 13 Alumni Achievement Awardees
Celebrating 65 years as the first university in Western Visayas, the University of San Agustin will honor13 outstanding alumni who excel in Culture and the Arts; Education; Entrepreneurship and Management; Environment, Science and Technology; Law; Media and Communications; Medicine and Health Sciences; Public and Community Service; and Sports. The USA Alumni Achievement Awards will take place on July 13, 2018 as part of the weeklong celebration of the annual Alumni and Personnel Homecoming.
The following are the 2018 USA Alumni Achievement Awardees:
Nelson Checa (Culture and the Arts)
Nelson Checa is a maestro when it comes to music performance. He was the Artistic Director of the USA Band and a faculty member of the Conservatory of Music for more than 30 years. His breadth of musicality led to his being a resource person in training-workshops initiated by the Department of Education and private institutions. Mr. Checa’s expertise includes the creation of musical ensembles.
Prof. Doralyn S. Dalisay, Ph. D. from the Biology Program, College of Liberal Arts, Sciences, and Education of the University of San Agustin is one of the 50 all-Filipino team of scientists seen off by Pres. Rodrigo R. Duterte aboard the BRP Davao del Sur last May 15, 2018 in Aurora, Quezon to explore the Philippine Rise, a portion of which was declared as marine resource reserve by virtue of PD 489.
The all-Filipino team of scientists will be doing a Coordinated National Marine Scientific Research Initiatives and Related Activities (CONMIRA) in the underwater plateau.
In a briefing with the press, Prof. Dalisay explained that the team will be studying marine microorganisms thriving in the Philippine Sea. They will also locate the geochemistry of the area.
A Balik-Scientist of the Department of Science and Technology, Prof. Dalisay emphasized the importance of exploring carefully the Philippine Rise in order to competently manage and sustain it. This marine resource reserve is promising as it can be a source of new drugs and antibiotics against pervasive illnesses such as cancer, dengue, and malaria.
Prof. Dalisay earned her doctorate degree in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. She was recently conferred the rank, Full Professor, by the University of San Agustin where she graduated Cum Laude, B. S. Pharmacy. – USA/jag

THE University of San Agustin (USA) has goneglobal whenit became a partner institution during the 2018 Bilateral Research Symposiumlast April 11 to 13in Taipei, Taiwan hosted byAcademia Sinica, one of the world’s most prestigious research institutes operating under the Office of the President of the Republic of China. As the first university in Western Visayas, USA showcased the Ilonggo research excellence during the three-day symposium.
Scientistsfrom the different units of Academia Sinica, such as the Institute of Biological Chemistry, Chemical Biology and Molecular Biophysics Program of the Taiwan International Graduate Program, Institute of Cellular and Organismic Biology, and Institute of Atomic and Molecular Sciences, attended this international meeting. Team USA, meanwhile, headed by its President Rev. Fr. Frederick C. Comendador, O. S. A. and Associate Vice President for Research Dr. Jonel P. Saludes, was represented by researchers from Medical Technology, Pharmacy, Biology, Chemistry, and Gregor Mendel Research Laboratories. USA research collaborators from West Visayas State University College of Medicine, Herbanext Laboratories Inc., and the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center also participated in the symposium.
The bilateral conference enabled Team USA to showcase the research discoveries that are scientifically- and socially-relevant, such as their findings on the value of Ilonggo honey and other natural resources in Panay as potential sources of antibiotics. Meanwhile, Academia Sinica scientists shared information on their advanced techniques in searching for new medicines and their state-of-the-art instrumentation. Concurrent to the symposium,a planning and brainstorming meeting between Team USA representatives and Dr. YijuangChern, Director of International Affairs and Dr. Hans Lin, Director of Academic Affairs and Instrument Service of Academia Sinica, was also held to strengthen the ties between the two institutions and intensify productive collaborations.
In April 2019, USA will serve as host to the 2ndBilateral Research Symposium and will welcome the Academia Sinica scientists to Iloilo.
