Augustinians conquer top posts in 2005 board exams

GRADUATES of the University of San Agustin conquered the top posts as indicated by the result of the licensure examinations for medical technologists and nurses, held in September and December, respectively. Marani. M. Sendelbach, a graduate of the College of Pharmacy and Medical Technology, placed first in the September 3 and 4 board exams for medical technologists, with a rating score of 88.20%. She is joined by seventy (70) other board passers, among which are six (6) more topnotchers, namely: Eric Jones L. Uy, 4th place (87.30%); Benison C. Chang, 5th place (87.20%); Franzini M. Golifardo, 6th place (87%); Donnie Jan L. Segocio, 13th place (85.90%); Reynan P. Rolle, 17th place (85.40%); and Mitchel Gwen L. Nagallo, 18th place (85.30%). The University earned an overall passing rate of 88% against the national passing score of 53.61%. With such laudable performance, USA ranked number 3 among all the medical technology schools in the Philippines.


In the integrated nursing licensure examination given on December 3 and 4 2005, USA produced four additional topnotchers. They are: James Arthur P. Rivero, 4th place (84%); Rowell T. Nava, 4th place (84%); Ma. Shiena L. Barinos, 8th place (83.4%); and Ryan Vincent M. Presas, 9th place (83.2%). All topnotchers are graduates of BS Nursing in March 2005 – three are regular graduates while one is a second courser. In the same examination, the University earned an overall passing score of 91.2% against the national passing figure of 53.97%. Based on the official result released on 17 December 2005, of the 24,287 who took the board exam nationwide, only 13,108 passed.


Gonesto, Gonzales attend int’l educators confab

Fr. Jojo and Fr. GieAugustinian Fathers Generous Gonesto and Jose Gonzales, VP for Administration and Prefect of Students, respectively, attended the International Congress of O.S.A. Educators and Schools on 11-15 July 2005 in Rome, Italy. With the theme “Augustinian Educators Looking Towards the Future”, the congress was attended by teachers, lay and religious at all levels of the Order’s educational centers.

The main objectives of the gathering are to: highlight the importance of the apostolate of education in the life of the Order and of the Church as an instrument of evangelization; deepen the knowledge of the concepts and Augustinian methods of education; offer a major opportunity to all teachers in our educational centers to be made aware of, and to share valuable experiences in this apostolate; and establish mechanisms of collaboration so as to be able to confront projects of common interest.

In his concluding address, Fr. Eusebio Berdon, OSA, Assistant General for Augustinian Centers of Education, said: “I wish… you may share the richness of this experience in the bigger Augustinian Community so that we may continue, with greater enthusiasm, living our noble vocation as Augustinian Educators.”


Libro Agustino bags nat’l book awards

ALON NCC AwardLIBRO Agustino, the publishing label of the University of San Agustin (USA), bagged two prizes in the 2004 National Book Awards from the Manila Critics Circle. Cultural Fictions by Isidoro Cruz won the Best Book of Literary Criticism, and What the Water Said by the Alon Literature Collective won the Best Anthology. The latter was also nominated for Best Design.

John Iremil Teodoro, editor in chief of Libro Agustino, and Cruz received the plaques and certificates during a formal awarding ceremony on September 4 during the Manila International Book Fair held at the World Trade Center in Pasay City.

Cruz is a Palanca award-winning poet and is the chair of the USA Humanities Department. The Alon Literature Collective is a group of young writers from De La Salle University-Manila. Cruz and Teodoro are members of this collective.

The Manila Critics Circle (MCC) is a group of literary critics and book reviewers with members like Isagani R. Cruz, Alfred Yuson, Cirilo F. Bautista, Ophelia Dimalanta among others. For 24 years now, the MCC is giving awards to best books published within the year.

Libro Agustino was launched in March 1, 2003 during the 50th anniversary of USA as a university. Its aim is to publish books by Augustinian and West Visayan authors. It has already published 18 titles.
