In time for its 65th anniversary as an institution of higher learning, the University of San Agustin is set to confer the rank of Full Professor to four faculty members on March 9, 2018 at the USA Auditorium. This is the highest academic rank that the University grants to teachers based on their educational attainment, teaching experience and productive scholarship.
The four new Full Professors come from diverse fields. Prof. Ma. Cecilia D. Alimen, Ph. D. in English Studies: English Language is the Academic Supervisor for Languages of the College of Liberal Arts, Sciences, and Education (CLASE) while Rev. Fr. Czar Emmanuel V. Alvarez, O. S. A., Ph. D. in Theology and Patristic Sciences is the Coordinator of the Institute of Foreign Languages under the CLASE. Prof. Doralyn S. Dalisay, Ph. D. in Microbiology and Immunology is a faculty member of the Pharmacy Program of the College of Health and Allied Medical Professions while Prof. Jonel P. Saludes, Ph. D. in Organic Chemistry is the Associate Vice President for Research under the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Dr. Alimen has been teaching in the University for more than two decades now. She holds two Master’s degrees – Master of Arts in Education, Major in English, and Master of Education, Major in Special Education. She has contributed to the field of education and research through her work. Her study on the after effects of the oil spill in Guimaras Island was published by the IAMURE International Journal of Social Sciences. She has also presented her research studies not only in the Philippines but also in other countries such as Thailand, the United States of America, and Vietnam.
Fr. Alvarez is a prolific writer and a sought-after resource person in his area of expertise. He edited “Kaplag 2015: A Commemorative Book” about the devotion to the Holy Child Jesus, and the Augustinian presence in the country, among others. He has taught Theology and classical languages in various learning institutions – the Augustinian Patristic Institute in Rome, Italy; the College Seminary of San Carlos y San Marcelo in Trujillo, Peru; and the Catholic Institute of Sydney in Australia, to name a few. He holds the distinction as the first Filipino Augustinian to have taught in these schools.
Dr. Dalisay is author/co-author of research works published in refereed journals such as the Journal of Organic Chemistry and Journal of Natural Products. A Postdoctoral Fellow for Natural Products Chemistry of the University of California San Diego, her expertise lies in chemical biology, environmental chemistry, and medicinal chemistry. Recently, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) cited her ongoing exploration of the chemical composition of honey for curative purposes. As a “Balik Scientist” of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Dr. Dalisay is also pursuing research on discovering and developing new drugs from pineapples and marine sediment. The government program encourages the return of Filipino scientists to the country to share their knowledge and expertise for national development.
Dr. Saludes is author/co-author to various scholarly works published in refereed journals here and abroad, such as the Scientific Augustinian and the Journal of Virology. A Postdoctoral Fellow for Chemical Biology of the University of Colorado Boulder, his research leans towards marine and terrestrial natural products discovery for health and therapeutic applications, design and preparation of novel peptides as new therapeutic and intracellular delivery agents, and peptide engineering to sense and capture nanoparticles. His body of work has led to his being named a “Balik Scientist” by the DOST.
The Full Professor rank will be conferred by the University of San Agustin through its Board of Trustees and President in the presence of the Regional Director of the Commission on Higher Education, the Academic Senate, faculty, personnel and students. – (USA/jag)
