The second best tour guide proclaimed during the competition was also from USA, Charrize Cresencio (BSTM 4A).

Torrillo, who is a first timer in the tour guiding competition, was satisfied with the results of the contest. On the other hand, he became happier when he knew that alongside the award he received a cash prize, a round trip ticket to anywhere in the Philippines and gift checks. Equipment in GMRL include polymerace chain reactor (PCR) for DNA testing, atomic absorption spectrophotometer for toxic heavy metals and water quality, high performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC) for pharmaceutical and medical plants analysis, gel electrophoresis for studying DNA and proteins, ultralow temperature freezer for storing bacterial culture and cancer cells, high quality Zeiss microscope, vertical autoclave for sterilization, rotary evaporators for plant extract processing, class II biosafety cabinets for bacterial and mammalian cell culture, microcentrifuge for DNA processing, 96-well microplate reader for antibody and anti-bacterial testing, and freeze dryer for processing temperature-sensitive proteins and plant extracts.

Currently, there are at least 12 studies being conducted in the laboratory. Two of these are Dr. Doralyn Dalisay’s and Melissa June Paderog’s Anticancer and Antimicrobial Compounds from Marine Actinobacteria and Development of Iloilo honey as raw material for pharmaceutical preparations.

GMRL is also a venue for projects conducted by external clients such as students from West Visayas State University – College of Medicine and science high schools in Iloilo. The laboratory services are also available to clients from universities, colleges, high schools, and private businesses in Panay, Negros and beyond.

Dr. Jonel Saludes, Ph.D., Associate Vice President for Research of the University of San Agustin, announced to the public that there are currently visiting professors from partner institutions in the United States of America that are funded by USAID STRIDE who train instructors and professors in the university. More exchanges and visits are expected in the upcoming months.
