Augustine of Hippo: Disciple of Wisdom, Defender of Catholic Truth

The nearly weeklong celebration to honor St. Augustine, patron saint of the University, began on August 25 and culminated on the Patron Saint's Day on August 28. It was marked by cultural activities, lectures, contests, and a Triduum Mass, articulating this year's theme "Augustine of Hippo: Disciple of Wisdom, Defender of Catholic Truth."

The Triduum Mass was held at the Chapel at 4:30 p.m. on August 25, 26 and 27, in preparation for the feast day.

The traditional velada presented by the university performing arts groups featured the new pop musical "Confessions of Three" (libretto by Edward Divinagracia and music by Arne Lubasan).

Other activities included literary, musical and dance competitions held on August 26 and 27 at the USA Auditorium; the launch of the USA Centennial Lecture Series with Prof. Jose Espinosa Jr.'s paper entitled "The Coming of the Augustinians to the Philippines;" the St. Augustine Scholarship Contest; and the USA Faculty and Personnel Association's (USAFAPA) production "Frolics through the Years."

The feast day, August 28, began with a floral offering at St. Augustine's statue and a procession in the campus, followed by the Patron Saint's Day Mass at the USA Gym. Then the faculty gathered in the Conference Hall for a symposium, a video lecture entitled "The Task of the Catholic Teachers: New Challenges, Same Goals." The symposium was organized by the Catholic Teacher's Guild of Augustine of Hippo: Disciple of Wisdom, Defender of Catholic Truth PATRON SAINT'S DAY the Philippines (CTGP)- Augustinian Chapter, headed by its president, Gorgornia Siscar, chair of the Humanities Department.

St. Augustine's ideals of community and friendship were manifested in "Salu-Salo Together," where all departments and colleges shared potluck lunch in the campus. The day was capped with the search for Miss Intrams and the cheer-dance contest at the Gym, and a gala performance of "Confessions of Three."

The next day, August 29, was declared a holiday, but the students still came back for Daguob (Battle of the Bands), an alternative/ pop music band showdown at the Gym. The theme was "Hirit ng Kabataang Agustino sa Isang Daang Taong Anibersaryo."

The Patron Saint's Day 2003 Working Committee was co-chaired by Eric Divinagracia and Emilio Sudaria of the Committee on Co-curricular Activities.
